McLeod, Atkinson headline nominees for 2017 Domestic sports awards

Swimming setting Alia Atkinson and Sprint hurdler Omar McLeod headline a list of 10 nominees for your 2017 RJRGleaner National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards.

The nominees – seven men and three girls – have been announced by Chairman  of the RJRGleaner Sports Foundation Selection Committee, Mike Fennell, in the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel in Kingston on Thursday.

Sprint celebrity Usain Bolt, who had an exit from athletics in the World Championships in August in London, is among the seven men’s nominees.

Another men’s nominees are goalkeeper Andre Blake , kickstart celebrity Christopher Binnie and cricketers Chris Gayle, Nikita Miller and Chadwick Walton.

For the women’s award Atkinson will be challenged by track and field duo  Elaine Thompson along with  Ristananna Tracey, who posted a lifetime best 53.74 moments to win the bronze medal at the women’s 400-metre challenges in the  World Championships at London.

McLeod and Atkinson had  exceptional 2017.

After disappointments for sprint celebrities   Bolt and Thompson at  London,  McLeod promised the only gold medal for Jamaica in the World Championships by winning the men’s 110-metre hurdles.

McLeod, also a winner  in last year’s Olympics at Rio,  started and ended strongly to record a time of 13.04 seconds and defeat reigning champion Sergey Shubenkov with a tenth of one second, together with Hungary’s Balazs Baji asserting a shock bronze medal and world-record holder Aries Merritt fifth.

McLeod also lowered his national record in 2017 following positing 12.90 (0.7m/s) en route to his third consecutive domestic name, a time which   catapulted him to joint fifth around the world all-time list.

Has been three gold medals at the FINA Swimming World Cup in Germany. These gold came from the women’s 50m, 100m and 200m breaststroke events.

The 100-metre freestyle national album broke at Coral Spring at July in the Florida Gold Coast Senior Championships.

Even the four-time Olympian broke the list  by winning the event in 55.35 moments, just 3 weeks after she became the first Jamaican woman to float the 100-metre butterfly in under a minute.

Atkinson ended the year ranked number one for route for the 50m and 100m breaststroke events and number four for the 200m breaststroke.

Five nominees were introduced for the People’s Choice Performance of the Year award. They are Omar McLeod, Kemar Lawrence, Andre Blake, Kamahl Russell and Oshane Thomas.

The National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year will be announced on Friday, January 19, 2018 in the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel.
